Yutaka Hiratsu: History of Magnesium Oxide and Bittern
【Abstract】
Bittern, a by-product of the salt production process, was historically discarded; however, in Ako, its effective utilization progressed and became a driving force behind the development of the chemical industry. Beginning with the successful production of magnesium carbonate in 1916, related companies accumulated in the region, forming a “bittern complex.” After World War II, research and development advanced, leading to the industrialization of high-purity magnesium oxide. As a result, bittern was transformed from an unused resource into a source of high-value-added materials, forming the foundation for globally significant products such as materials for electrical steel sheets.
